Aachen is a small town in Germany on the border of the Netherlands and Belgium. Aachen, the most important border city of North Rhine-Westphalia, is also known for its universities. About 40,000 people of its 250,000 inhabitants are students. Its cafes are usually crowded with young and educated people. Many of the buildings were damaged after a fire in 1956 in the city, so unfortunately there is not too much historical architecture in the city, not even in the Old Town district. The city's most important building is the Aachen Cathedral which was built by the Roman-German Emperor Charlemagne. The Cathedral was placed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO and at 800 years old is one of the oldest houses of worship in Europe.

 

The Heiling Church is also another historic church. Its construction was begun in the 14th century and it was restored several times. Another historic building in the old town is Town Hall or Rathaus. The building was redesigned in a Neo-Gothic style in the 18th century. If you go in December, the Christmas markets may be visited together with the majestic Theater Building. Couven Museum , where you can see what the bourgeois lifestyle was like in the 18th and 19th centuries, is another place to visit in the city. Aachen is also famous for its hot springs inherited from the Roman period. The city is also famous for its hot waters.

 

In Aachen the slightly warming impact of Oceanic climate can be seen. However in winter the days get dark quickly. Therefore it will be better to visit in the summer and spring months. However, it also a very rainy city, with precipitation occuring over 200 days of the year. Because it is not a very big city, you can still discover many places by walking.
