About Gecitkale

The island of Cyprus stands out for being the largest island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily and Sardinia. Regardless of the fact that the island is geographically located in Asia, it is very European in a political and economic sense. Currently the island is divided into two with the southern half being part of the European Union. Northern Cyprus, officially known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is divided into Lefkosa, Gazimagusa, Girne, Guzelyurt, and Iskele. Lefkoniko, also known as Gecitkale, is home to the Gecitkale Turkish Air Force Base.

Located in the Gazimagusa District, it is the birthplace of famous poet Vasilis Michaelides. The city, which was home to Greeks and Turks until 1960, is a model for multiculturalism. After the mid 1970’s, when Cyprus was invaded by Turkey and the division took place, many of the Greek residents emigrated to the south of the island. Despite this fact, Turkish and Greek are both still spoken in this region. Also due to British influence throughout history a portion of the island’s residents speak English very well. According to the latest census the population of Northern Cyprus is a little over 300 thousand. Every year 1 million 200 tourists visit the northern part of the island. The island stands out for sun and beach tourism but lately nature tourism has also increased.
