The city was founded at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers in 1838 and was initially named ‘Kansas Town’. It reached its current boundaries in 1853 and became a city. The name of the city means ‘people of the south wind’ in Sioux native language. It was ranked 9th among the ‘10 Most Comfortable Liveable Cities’ in the 2010 Forbes Magazine.
