About San Jose

San Jose is the first capital of the U.S. state of California and the home of technology-focused Silicon Valley. Technology and internet-based multinational corporations like Facebook, Google, Apple, IBM, Adobe, Yahoo, eBay, and Electronic Arts have offices in San Jose. World-famous universities are also located in the city.

With tens of thousands of people employed by technology-focused companies, San Jose is among a list of cities with the lowest unemployment rate. Furthermore, it is listed as one of the cities with the largest number of parks in the country; making up more than a million square metres of green space. The Alum Rock Park, founded in 1872, is the oldest park in the state of California, while Almaden Quicksilver Park is the largest with an area covering 16 square kilometres.

San Jose was under the control of the Spanish and First Mexican empires and the California Republic from 1777 until 1848. This rich history is showcased in the History Museum of San Jose, the Portuguese Historical Museum, the Tech Museum of Innovation, and the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum. Interestingly, San Jose’s Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies is home to the largest collection of Beethoven materials outside of Europe. San Jose International Airport is only 6 kilometres from the city centre; there are bus services that operate from the city centre to the airport.
