Belize City is a port city and the largest city in Belize, which is located in Central America. It was once the capital of the former British Honduras. In 1961 the city was destroyed by a hurricane and the capital was moved further inland to Belmopan. Important sites to visit in the city, and its surroundings, include Ambergris Caye, the Belize Zoo, Caye Caulker, Xunantunich, Great Blue Hole, and the Museum of Belize. Belize City is the economic and industrial center of the country. The city’s marketplace hosts almost all of the country’s insurance centers and branches of all the major banks. The Great Blue Hole, located 70 km off the coast of Belize City, is an impressive natural formation that is a giant underwater sinkhole. The Lighthouse Reef is home to this sinkhole, which is 300 meters in diameter, and 124 meters deep; this circular sinkhole attracts the attention of tourists from all around the world. In addition to other awe-inspiring natural beauty, Belize City is home to important archeological sites and the Museum of Belize, which is an art and history museum that was restored and renewed in 2002. The museum is a great option for tourists interested in a cultural experience.

There are two airports that serve Belize City, the Belize City Municipal Airport and the Philip SW Goldson International Airport. Belize City Municipal Airport is located only 1.5 km from the city center; the airport is a 20-minute walk from the city center. The Philip SW Goldson International Airport is located 78 km from the city. International flights are usually done through Philip SW Goldson International Airport. Flights from New York to Belize City have at least one layover and take at least 6 hours. Flights from London to Belize City have at least one layover and take at least 20 hours.
