With historical roots dating back to 11th century, Freiburg im Breisgau, which was a castle when founded, is a city near the French border. A part of Baden-Württemberg in Germany, the city was included in Austria in 1386. Freiburg im Breisgau, which had an immense cultural and economic development in Middle Ages due to the silver mines in the city, turned into a center for the Catholics at the beginning of the 19th century. The city, conquered by the French forces during the Second World War, was reconnected to Germany after the war.
