About Gatineau

Located right opposite the Ottawa River, Gatineau takes its name from a fur merchant that drowned in the river in 1683. Its population is mostly French. The main industry of the city is paper pulp, but construction material, electronic equipment, pharmaceutical industries also form an effective part of the city’s economy.

Other than its industrial importance, the reason the city is just as popular as Ottawa is because it has something to offer for people of all ages. The city offers a dynamic atmosphere at all times with its nightlife and if you want to learn about the history of the city then you can go to Canadian History Museum. You can even take any kids to the Children’s Museum, designed specifically to reflect the imagination of children younger than 14. If you have an interest in classic aeroplanes then you should definitely add the Vintage Wings Museum to your list, which is in an 2100 metresquare hanger.

You can go skiing in the 190 kilometre skiing tracks at the top of Gatineau during the winter, and in the summer walk beside the city’s beaches and soak up some sunshine. Gatineau offers many different sporting choices for travellers and is also suitable for activities such as nature walks, mountain biking, and canoeing. Rock climbing and bird watching are the activities most preferred in the spring. You can travel around the city by bike using the wide network of cycling lanes.

Festivals complete Gatineau’s colourful character the most. Out of numerous festivals the most well known are the Canadian Kayaking Marathon and the Hot Air Balloon festival. The hotels and festivals are full of tourists especially in June as most fairs and exhibitions are held during this time.

The closest airport to the city is the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport, which is 17.5 kilometres away. You can use shuttle services and taxis to get from the airport to the city.
