The history of Gharb, or with its other know name L-Gharb, which is one of the oldest settlements of Malta Gozo, dates back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Gharb, which had been under the domination of the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Byzantines and many other civilizations, was dominated by the Arabs between the years 870-1090. Gharb, which is a traditional Maltese village, is the place where the most fertile land of Gozo is located. The village, which has been called as Sikkina ta’ l-Għarb for many years, continues its existence today as a place where most of its people make their living thanks to ironworking, locksmithery, cotton weaving, agriculture, lace production, fishing and carpentry. The nearest beaches to Garb that is located in the northern part of Malta are Dwejra, Ramla Beach and Marsalforn. Gharb, which is easily accessible by public transport from Victoria, share its borders with the villages of Marsalforn, Ghasri and Zebbug.

According to the legend, the San Dimitri Chapel that is located within the borders of Gharb was built by a woman who escaped from the captivity of Saint Demetrius.
