Ghent, which is one of the largest cities of Belgium, is an old city located in the Flemish Region on the road from Brussels to Brugge. Ghent, which was a powerful, rich, large and known city in the middle ages, still continues to be impressive despite of not being assertive it used to be in the past.
Just like Brugge, Ghent has succeeded in protecting its medieval architecture without almost any change or damage in its region called the old city. In this historical city having a fabulous atmosphere, today’s successful architecture examples have also taken their place. On the other hand, Ghent is also referred to as a university city.
It is possible to reach many parts of the city by using the developed bus network. Visitors can also travel around by renting a bicycle. Local people frequently use bicycles to reach many parts of this small city. Although using a bicycle can be a little challenging because of the cobblestone pavements of the old city, it is preferred by many people thanks to being more practical and since motor vehicles are not allowed on many streets.
The canal passing through the city and the St. Michael Bridge offer a wonderful view of Ghent. You should watch Ghent from this point especially with night lighting. You can also join boat tours organized on the canal. St. Bavo Cathedral, St. Nicholas Church and Belfry Bell Tower are three important architectural symbols of the city. Gerald the Devil Castle built in the 13th century and used for different purposes such as prison, castle, monastery and school is an important place to visit. In addition, Gravensteen (castle of the counts) dating back to 12th century is open to visit between 09:00 am and 05:00 pm every day. This castle is worth seeing with its interesting history.
Korenmarkt Square is one of the most popular, lively and crowded points of the city. On and around this square, there are many restaurants, cafes, bars, stores and shops where you do shopping while travelling around. Korenmarkt Square, where street artists show performances all the time, is home to various festivals and events.
Flower export is one of the most important instruments of the city economy. Flower festival is held in the city every year. Even if you cannot come across with this festival, you can breathe this air in the flower market set up every Sunday and you can witness much more than expected from a flower market. Remember that Belgian beers and chocolates are very famous and you should definitely try these.
Museum voor Schone Kunsten (“Museum of Fine Arts”) exhibits the works of important Flemish artists. Art lovers should also visit Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (City Museum for Contemporary Art). Both museums are located side by side in a delightful atmosphere of a wonderful park.
