Güzelyurt makes a nice daytrip for those already visiting Cappadocia and Nevşehir. Located in Aksaray, Güzelurt contains three underground cities and over 50 churches carved into volcanic rock. Two of the most famous of these, Bahattin’s Samanlığı Church and Pürenli Seki Church, are painted with frescoes dating back to the 10th century. Unassuming cave entrances from the outside, these hidden sanctuaries open up into unexpected chambers full of intricate works of art. Similar murals also line the walls of the Karagedik Church, an example of 11th century Byzantine architecture that sits atop a steep grassy hill. Other churches to visit include the 13th century Kırkdamaltı Church and St. Gregorious Church, which was converted into a mosque in the Ottoman period. The Ziga hot springs, fairy chimneys, Ihlara and Manastır Valleys and quaint village houses all contribute to Güzelyurt’s intrigue and charm.

The closest airport to Güzelyurt is Nevşehir Cappadocia Airport, about 75 km away. From the airport, visitors can arrive by taxi or rental car. Buses also travel to the district from the nearby town centers of Aksaray (35 km away), Niğde (80 km away) and Nevşehir (70 km away).
