About Kartepe

Kartepe, which is one of the 12 districts of Kocaeli (İzmit), is located in the west of Sapanca. The distance between Kocaeli city center and Kartepe is 25 kilometers. The district is about 115 kilometers of İstanbul. For this reason, it also attracts many visitors from İstanbul thanks to its nature providing a great environment for skiing especially during the winter months. In addition to being a famous district for winter tourism, it also has a ski center with a wonderful sea view. The district surrounded by the forests consisting of pine, chestnut, oak and hazel trees and Samanlı Mountains is the third highest point of Marmara region. Since it receives a great amount of rainfall, you can be welcomed by a green nature every season. The period commonly preferred for skiing is between December and March. In the district, trout caught from stream beds can be eaten every season. The history of Kartepe is known to date back to the Byzantine and Roman period. Since the district was on the silk road, it was very important in the Ottoman period. The majority of the inhabitants of the district are immigrants. In the district, wrestling festivals has been organized since 2004.

You can reach Kartepe by following the TEM road. You can also reach the district by train with the Haydarpaşa – Adapazarı line that leaves passengers in Maşukiye. The closest airport to Kartepe is Sabiha Gökçen located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. The 90-km long distance between the district and the airport can be provided by airline transfers, buses and taxis.
