Marmara Island, located in the west of Marmara sea and connected with Balıkesir county, is the second largest Island of Turkey. Taxis and dolmuş are used as transport on the island.
The effects of both a Continental and a Mediterenean climate can be observed on Marmara Island. While January is the coldest month, July is the warmest with an average temperature of 25 degrees. Even though the summer months are dry, there is a lot of rainfall especially in January, and at least a little bit of snow can be observed in December and February. Despite being an island, humidity is quite low as the marble bedrocks on the island absorb moisture from the air. Economic activity on Marmara Island is generally heavily dependent on tourism. Countless beaches, tourist resorts of all sizes, and bed and breakfast type guesthouses can be found all around the island. All are sand beaches except Aba Beach. It’s believed that the water of Şifalı Su Beach, where freshwater flows into seawater, has healing properties for some illnesses. Aside from this, Saraylar Village has its own unique economy and history. It is here where the marble that gives its name to the island is mined and then exported through the port built specifically for this logistic reason. There is also an open-air museum here, where marble relics, tombs, and statues, that are estimated to be thousands of years old, are exhibited.
The nightlife on Marmara Island is not particularly vibrant. Some go to the nearby Avşa Island for a night out and return in the morning. It is accepted, however, that watching the sunset from the west coast of Marmara Island is incomparably beautiful.
