Midrand is a city located in the Johannesburg region of South Africa's Gauteng state. Midrand, one of the eight tourism routes in Johannesburg, is also one of the cities with developed textile and motor vehicles industries. Being an economic center and close to major highway links make Gauteng an important city. Despite being a business center along the motorway between Sandton and Centurion, the city is also popular as a resort with its tranquil surroundings.
It is divided into many local regions such as Midrand Halfway Hause, Pretoria, Carlswald, Blue Hill, Glenferness, Crowthorne, Glen Austin, Halfway Hause and so on, and each region comes forward with different characteristics. For example, while Carlwald is known for its modern houses and shopping centers, Blue Hill, Crowthorne and Glenferness, a bit further away, are composed of non-urbanized quiet areas. Gallegher Estate, the largest conference and exhibition center in South Africa, and Nizamiye Mosque, the largest mosque in the Southern hemisphere, are located in Midrand. This Turkish-built mosque, built with an architecture inspired by 16th century dated Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, is attracting attention with its four large minarets, over 200 stained glass windows and 21 hand-painted domes. The complex within the mosque hosts schools, clinics, bookshops, carpenters and restaurants.
St. Sergius Russian Orthodox Church, a new building built in 2003, is a magnificent example of traditional Russian architecture. The church, which was designed similar to the cathedral in Kremlin, Moscow, has five golden domes. Mall Of Africa, one of Africa's largest shopping complexes, is one of the significant places in Midrand region.
