Orhaniye is a Mediterranean village in the town of Marmaris and the province of Muğla, Turkey. A quaint settlement 30 km from the bustling center of Marmaris, it’s famous for its pine forests and gorgeous beaches. The Knights of Rhodes and pirates sought shelter in the town, once called Bybassos. Today it contains the most prominent yacht marina of the Hisaronu Gulf. The most popular shore of Orhaniye is Kızkumu, “Maiden’s Sand,” whose abnormally red tinged sand makes it one of the must-see destinations of Marmaris. Legend has it that King Bybassos’s daughter ran into the water to escape pirates. Since she didn’t know how to swim, she filled her skirt with sand on the shore and spread it out before her feet as she raced toward the horizon. When darkness fell, she ran out of sand, fell into the open sea and drowned. This story explains not only the sand’s crimson color, but also the 600-meter stretch of pebbles that facilitates the peculiar site of bathers walking on water. The calm glassy surface of the the sea reflects the surrounding tree-covered mountains, creating a breathtaking spectrum of blues and greens. Tour boats carry vacationers to nearby coves along the Hisaronu Gulf. Visitors can also hike up to the peaks of the village and explore ancient remains along the peaceful countryside, including the belongings and castle of the Knights of Rhodes. Along the coast, restaurants, hotels and cafes serve traditional and international food and drink.
From Marmaris center, you can catch one of the frequent minibuses to Orhaniye or drive there in your own car.
