About Perth (Australia)

It is a coastal town in the southwest coast of Australia. It is the capital of Western Australia state, and is the fourth largest city in the country. It is located where the Swan River meets the Indian Ocean. Perth was founded in 1829 by the British Captain James Stirling but was given its name by the British Colonial Secretary, Sir George Murray, who named it after a city in Scotland. It gained city status in 1857. The discovery of gold reserves in 1890 and the opening the Port of Fremantle in 1901 played an important part in helping Perth to become a major city.

Today the city is important to the Australian economy due to the mining of diamonds, coal, iron, nickel, manganese, aluminum in the surrounding area, as well as the processing of oil and gas and hosting some of the coutnry's most important manufacturing centers. Within the wider area the Swan River and Freemantle Port are other major touristic areas that should be visited, as well as the Freemantle Prision, the Swan Valley, the West Australia Museum, Rottenes Island, Cohunu Koala Park and the old Parliament Building.
