About Piraeus

Piraeus is an ancient port city having a coast of Aegean Sea, in the region of Attica in Greece. The city has the biggest port of the country and has been a main transportation and trade centre since its establishment. Another advantage of Piraeus is being only 12 kilometres away from the capital, Athens. Almost all the visitors that wish to go the Greek Islands from Athens need to use the Port of Piraeus. The means of urban transportation are subway, bus and trolleybus.

Piraeus has Mediterrenean climate; characterised by dry and hot long summers and mild, rainy short winters. Despite being a coastal city and its Mediterrenean climate, the sea tourism in Piraeus is not well-developed with its only one beach. The main reason is that most of the costline is used for the port, in other words, transportation and trade.

Though Piraeus is seen as a place to drop-by by most of its visitors while they are on their way, it has plenty of things to offer to its visitors. In this city where you can feel the tavern culture to the fullest, it is highly recommended not to come back without going to any tavern, drinking uzo, eating octopus and watching a sirtaki show. St. Nicholas, St. Spyridon and Holy Trinity are the three must-see Orthodox churches of Piraeus. Museum lovers must certainly visit the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus and Hellenic Maritime Museum. The city walls, the Hill of Kastella and Bay of Zea recently known as Pasalimani are also among the places that should be visited in this city. Diomidous Botanical Garden amazes its visitors with its eye-catching landscape. The small shops and market booths in the port are generally preferred for shopping. It is also possible to find a wide range of souvenirs there.
