Construction of Portland International Airport which is the largest airport in the state of Oregon in the United States, began in Portland in 1935. After about five years of work the airport started to welcome passengers. In 1951, a new runway of eight thousand feet was built at Portland International Airport which gave the airport an international status. At Portland International Airport, 90 percent of passenger traffic in Oregon state and 95 percent of cargo transportation are met and is used as the airbase of the Oregon Air National Guard.
