Skibbereen is located on the banks of the Ilen River in the southernmost part of Ireland, known for its fishing port and vibrant market. Located in the middle of beautiful landscape in the West Cork region, advanced in agriculture, industry and tourism, the city is also known as the capital of Cork. Skibbereen is located 85 kilometers from Cork.

It is also a pleasure to visit the streets of the city, where the local artists exhibit their works, alongside the old streets of the city, from the 1600s. The Skibbereen Heritage Center, where the old gas building of the area is being converted into an exhibition space, is accompanied by interesting artifacts. The city also has a lot of energy from the lively festivals. Every year in July, the Skibbereen Arts Festival is open to many exhibitions, concerts and shows, and you can buy local jams. October is home to Skibbereen Vintage Day, West Cork's most famous festival. At the festival you can see a wide collection of classic cars, motorcycles and tractors.

Skibbereen, in the mid-1800s, was the city most affected by the great famine in Ireland and in the garden of Abbeystrewerey, there is a mass grave of about 10,000 people who starved. At Skibbereen Heritage Center, you'll also find exhibitions about this drama.

With its folkloric structure, history and cultural heritage, the city has a lot of pleasure and there are many attracting points to golf courses, scuba diving spots and archaeological sites. Skibbereen Lake, which is 3 kilometers to the east of the city, is one of the most beautiful promenade places in the region, while it is rich in many kinds of fish such as rainbow fish, trout and pike fish. Lough Hyne, located 7 kilometers from the city, is Europe's largest saltwater lake and you can watch the Mediterranean sea life deep down. You can travel to the nearby fishing villages in around 10 minutes which are 5 km south of the city, and see old castles, also you can participate in boat tours and whale and dolphin shows. Skibbereen and the nearby villages, with a lush green nature backdrop, are some of the locations where the film War of the Buttons was filmed which is about the childhood of Ireland's bad days.

The nearest airport is Cork Airport, 77 kilometers from the city, which is so small that you can explore every corner on foot or by bike. You can travel to the city center of Skibbereen by bus and taxi or rent a car.
