Ula, in the district of Muğla on Turkey’s southern coast, is a peaceful town just 15 km from Muğla center and 50 km from Marmaris. A mainly flat valley surrounded on all sides by mountains, Ula’s most notable feature is the use of bicycles by most inhabitants, from children to seniors. Visitors can also rent bikes to tour the beautiful town, as well as take minibuses to neighboring attractions. The locals earn their living from bee keeping and agriculture, so fresh honey, olives, grapes and other fresh products are sold about town. Tourists should also try Ula’s delicious unique dishes, such as sour chicken, green beans, liver, kebab, stuffed vegetables and “saç böreği” (homemade phyllo dough filled with greens, cheese or other fresh ingredients). Every Friday the villagers set up a market with regional homemade food products, handicrafts and wicker art that make great souveniers. The exquisite woodwork on the buildings evidence Ula’s tradition of expert carpententry, and the town is renowned for its beautifully constructed houses. Fourteen historic stone tombs carved into the high peaks of Mount Alicin constitute an important historic landmark of Ula. Akyaka, Ula’s southern constituency, is a secluded paradise on the Mediterranean Sea where every year thousands of tourists flock to kitesurf, sunbathe, and swim in the clean cerulean water surrounded by breathtaking mountain forests.
