Usti Nad Labem is located in a mountainous region in the Elbe Valley, north of the Czech Republic. The city which is located 20 kilometers from the Czech -German border and only 66 kilometers from the capital city of Prague is the eighth largest city of the country, and the second largest city of North Bohemia. The small streams connecting to the river in the city along with Elbe River make a panoramic view. The most attractive of the 12 waterfalls near the city is the Vanovsky Waterfall. The height of the waterfall, where stalactites and stalagmites offer a lace-like pattern especially in winter, is 12 meters.
Remains of Stekov Castle, a symbol of the city, once a magnificent castle, rise114 meters above the Elbe River. The castle, built between 1312 and 1318 is, one of the most beautiful spots to enjoy the view of the city. Another historical heritage of the city is the Gothic Revival Church, one of the most artistic works of the past centuries. The Church of St. Mary with the largest Neo-gothic cross of Bohemia built in the late 12th century, the Baroque monument of St. Vojtech from 1186, and Apostle Pavel Church with its eye-catching red building are among the city’s most famous faith centers. While the Northern Czech Museum opened in 1909, the city zoo that spans on 26 hectares and hosts 240 animals, the 30 meter-high watchtower Vetruse with a restaurant are among the main attractions of the city, the circular stone structure which used to be a gallows tree in the Middle Ages is also attracting high interest.
The city has natural trails for hiking and cycling. Surrounded by the Ceske Stredohori hills, you can ski in Telnice region and rock climb in Tisa region of the city. Labe region, on the other hand, is well suited for yachting, rowing and water skiing.
The best time to visit the town with a temperate climate throughout the year is between September and October. The closest airport you can land to get to the city is the Vaclav Havel Airport in Prague. You can reach the city by taking a bus or a taxi or renting a car from the airport which is 64 kilometers away from Usti Nad Labem.
