About Volgograd Intl. Airport

In 1933, Gumrak Airport was constructed in the city of Volgograd by the decision of the Soviet Union, so that the Soviet Air Force could carry out training flights and use military cargo planes. After the need for commercial flights in the region, in 1938, postal and commercial flights began to operate to limited regions. During the Second World War, the airport was occupied by the German Army as a fuel and supply depo and was badly damaged during the war and all flights were stopped. After the renovation works, Gumrak Airport was reopened in 1957 and in 1959, started to operate international flights. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a decison made by the Russian Federation, the airport was transferred to a special administration and in 1994, Gumrak Airport started to operate international flights again, after operating domestic flights for a while. In order for the airport to meet European standards, in 2012, comprehensive reconstruction work was started and a new terminal building and runway were constructed at the airport.
