Coimbra is a small city connected to the Centro region in Portugal. Located 100 km from the city of Porto, Coimbra is famous for its university. The University of Coimbra was founded by King Dinis in 1290. It is also one of the oldest universities in Europe and is still quite popular. You can see a large number of university students in the city streets and squares and because of this small cafes, bars, and entertainment venues as well. The city has a population of approximately 150 thousand, 20 thousand of which are students. The city itself is historic and is therefore home to many historic structures.
In addition to the historic university buildings located in the city, places to visit include the Mosteiro de Santa Clara, the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, Igreja e Mosteiro, Parque Verde do Mondego, Portugal dos Pequenitos, Capela De Sao Miguel, Ponte Pedro e Ines, Almedina Tower, Quinta das Lagrimas, New Cathedral of Coimbra, and Largo da Portagem. Situated along the Mondego River, winters in Coimbra can be quite cold. Since it is not located along the sea the city has a more continental climate. It is Portugal’s largest city after Porto and Lisbon.
