It is the capital of Funen (Fyn) Island in Denmark. It is the third largest city in the country. Hans Christian Andersen, a well-known fairytale writer, was born and raised in Odense. The city, which has a history of 4 thousand years, has its name from Odin, the god of war and wisdom in Scandinavian mythology. It is a small European city famous for its museums, art galleries, chateaus, green spaces and extensive parks. There is no high-rise building in the city, which evolves by preserving its past heritage and resembles a fairy-tale land. It is one of the most important tourism centers in Denmark. While the shipbuilding industry has had a say in the city economy, the port and tourism sector is in the forefront today. Built in 1935, the Odin Tower was the most magnificent structure of the city in those years. The tower, which is the second highest tower in Europe after the Eiffel Tower in Paris, was destroyed by a Nazi group in 1944. A new tower was not built; but a miniature replica is exhibited at Odin Park, where it was opened at first. Hans Christian Andersen is the cultural and tourism symbol of the city and therefore the whole country. He was born in 1805 in this city. The museum where the objects about his life and all his works are exhibited, and the house where the writer was born are among the main tourist attractions. Andersen died in Copenhagen in 1875.
