Galveston is a small city and resort destination located roughly 1 hour south of the major U.S city of Houston. Located on a large island in the Gulf of Mexico, the city's economy revolves around tourism, transportation, and finance. At the same time it is home to the University of Texas Medical Center, and many beach hotels and surf shops. In the past Galveston was once one of the country's most prestigious and wealthiest holiday destinations, before a major hurricane and flood killed many people in the early 1900s. There are still historical buildings and Victorian-era mansions in the city that can be visited, however. The city has a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters.
